Maike has more than nine years of economic consulting experience. She has delivered rigorous and complex economic analyses for a wide range of private and public sector clients, focusing on education, labour markets and public policy. She has particularly strong expertise in higher education having worked across the sector, with research delivered for government departments and agencies, trade unions, university membership organisations, think tanks, charities and many individual higher education institutions.

Influential Work

  • Estimated the impact of Brexit on UK higher education, on behalf of the UK Department for Education
  • Assessed the impact of Group of Eight universities on the Australian economy
  • Analysed the impact of the recommendations made on behalf of Universities UK by the Augar Review of higher education funding in England on the Treasury, universities, students and graduates
  • Estimated the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on UK universities’ finances on behalf of Universities UK and the University and College Union
  • Estimated the costs and benefits of international higher education students to the UK economy on behalf of the Higher Education Policy Institute and Universities UK.

Outside of Nous

Prior to joining Nous, Maike was a Divisional Director at UK-based economic consultancy London Economics. As co-head of London Economics’ Education and Labour Markets Team, she led a team in developing complex and bespoke economic models for a wide range of projects and high-profile clients in the UK and internationally, with a particular focus on higher and further education.

Maike holds a Bachelor of Science (economics) from Maastricht University, the Netherlands; and the University of California at Berkeley, United States. She also holds a Master of Science in Economics from Maastricht University. In recognition of her technical and professional experience, she has been appointed a peer reviewer for the Economics of Education Review.

In her spare time...

Maike loves the outdoors, and enjoys running, playing tennis and hiking in Australia’s national parks. She also enjoys travelling and exploring new countries and places.
