Martin is a skilled data scientist with expertise in managing analytical projects, statistical analysis, visualisation, data wrangling and databases. He has experience using large government and private datasets to solve complex problems, including using data to make decisions about strategy, government policy and program design. Martin is passionate about enabling stakeholders to harness data and use it to make decisions that deliver lasting impact.

Influential work

  • Led quantitative analytics stream for a national evaluation of an Australian Government program to support Australians with severe mental illness
  • Combined multiple government datasets, including NAPLAN results, to identify the key drivers of disadvantage in Australian schools and guide the investment of a large philanthropic organisation
  • Identified regional skills shortages by combining real-time job advertisement data with Australian Bureau of Statistics datasets to support the higher education sector’s realignment
  • Developed relational databases and web applications with government and non-government data that enable rapid insight generation
  • Enhanced organisational analytics capability through the development and delivery of an advanced analytics accelerator course.

Outside of Nous

Before joining Nous, Martin worked with an international non-government organisation in Mumbai, India to develop its monitoring and evaluation program. He has completed a PhD in neuroscience that used advanced statistical methods to understand schizophrenia. Martin has also taught a variety of courses at Sydney University, including a series that examines the overlap between machine learning and neuroscience.

In his spare time...

Martin enjoys hiking in the Australian bush and seeing live music when he can. He runs Buckley’s & None, an Australian political forecasting site.
