Matthew has over 20 years’ experience in government and higher education and a track record of delivery in complex environments as a senior adviser and executive. He has an approach based on integrity and excellent communication skills; and strong experience in organisational capability, rooted in a focus on policy and operational delivery. Matthew brings a deep understanding of policy development and organisational dynamics, honed through a series of high profile roles.

Influential work

  • Led the implementation of a consolidated professional services function at a time of significant sectoral change as deputy vice chancellor (university secretary and chief operating officer) of an English university
  • Progressed the UK Coalition Government’s Higher Education Reform Programme as director of the Civil Service Team
  • Served as lead official on complex international employment dossiers for the UK business department
  • Served as the key senior interface between ministers and departmental officials as principal private secretary to two UK secretaries of state
  • Led core corporate functions at director-level in the UK business department.

Outside of Nous

Matthew spent over 20 years working in the UK Government’s business and education departments, where his roles included principal private secretary to the secretary of state and director of higher education. Matthew holds a Master and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from The University of Sheffield and a Master of Business of Administration from Imperial College, London.

In his spare time, Matthew enjoys exploring the Sussex countryside where he lives and attempts to play cricket (badly) in a local team.
