Michael works with senior decision-makers of large, complex businesses to develop and launch new growth ventures, set effective customer driven strategies and design modern business models. His broad experience across multiple sectors and jurisdictions enables him to fuse seemingly disconnected ideas and quickly identify and prioritise opportunities. He is sought after for his ability to blend structured consulting approaches, proven business methodologies, analytics, human-centred design, digital and facilitation to achieve commercial solutions, clear return-on-investment and stakeholder convergence.

Influential work

  • Established a new growth venture for a housing provider; developing the product and business case and supporting set-up, go-to-market strategy and launch
  • Led a stream to redesign the student experience and customer service network of a leading multi-campus and online university to improve student outcomes and achieve 15% efficiency, and supported the implementation of the target operating model
  • Program-managed the business transformation of a top-10 ranked Australian university to develop a 10-year strategy, implementation plan and transformation blueprint to achieve $42M in annual profit growth
  • Led a customer experience and digital redesign of a customer-facing transfer process for a Victorian transport organisation, leading to $52m in annual savings
  • Developed a business case for a fast-moving consumable goods manufacturer to be acquired by a listed company to achieve benefits of $38M per annum.

Outside of Nous

Michael has had a diverse and eclectic career. He practised law at a national mid-tier firm, had leadership positions at a not-for-profit organisation (NFP) and was a business founder and operator. Prior to and while working at Nous, Michael founded and ran an educational services business for 15 years; practised planning and environment law for a national commercial firm; led international development projects for a NFP and later became its first innovation manager. He mentors students at University of Melbourne and participates in mentor programs.

Michael holds a Master of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering from University of Melbourne. He was admitted to practice law at the Supreme Court of Victoria and is certified in service design, human-centred design and Agile.

In his spare time...

Michael loves snowboarding, the outdoors, music festivals and unusual locations. He consumes multiple books concurrently and is interested in how people relate. He plays basketball for two teams despite being vertically challenged.
