Mike is a human-centred design specialist who has designed for customers, end users and businesses most of his career. He has experience as a technical writer and in user experience (UX) consulting across finance, telecommunications, retail, government, tertiary education, transport and manufacturing. He has led the design and redesign of many websites and applications for blue-chip companies and government departments.

Influential work

  • Led, co-designed and prototyped a touch-screen, assembly-line application for a global medical technology company; the match to user and business requirements resulted in the app going straight into development with zero delay
  • Led and co-designed an award-winning website redesign for a major Australian bank
  • Designed and led research to understand customer needs and assess underperforming retail food outlets at a large UK hospital, in order to improve profitability and customer service. The quality of the work rebooted the relationship between the client and the hospital
  • Planned and led independent service evaluation research into Wellington’s commuter rail service, delivering a highly commended evaluation report for an expression-of-interest submission
  • Co-authored the “Hiser Element” toolkit, one of the earliest commercial products to articulate the end-to-end process for human-centred product design.

Outside of Nous

Before Nous, Mike worked in a variety of UX consulting roles, including practice manager at the Hiser Group and principal consultant at ExperienceLab. He spent many years as an instructor and author of several courses in human-centred design.

In his spare time...

Mike is a bit of a motorcycle ‘tragic’ who can often be found doing laps in outdoor pools or reading.
