A human-centred design specialist, Mike has been creating effective experiences for customers, end users and businesses for most of his career; first as a technical writer and then in user experience (UX) consulting across the finance, telecommunications, retail, government, and tertiary education sectors. He brings wide experience in UX consulting management and in advocating human-centred design to clients.

Influential work

  • Co-led and designed a touch-screen, assembly-line application for a global medical technology company
  • Designed and led customer research to assess underperforming retail food outlets at Derriford Hospital (UK), with the resulting recommendations successfully restarting the client’s relationship with the Hospital Trust
  • Planned and researched end-to-end customer experiences of the Wellington (New Zealand) commuter rail service, delivering a highly-commended evaluation report for an expression-of-interest submission
  • Led and managed the redesign of a new online shop for the Optus website
  • Worked on the industry award-winning redesign of Westpac’s website
  • Co-authored the “Hiser Element” toolkit, one of the earliest commercial products to articulate the end-to-end process for human-centred product design.

Outside of Nous

Before joining Nous, Mike held principal consultant roles at Bayfront UX in Sydney, ExperienceLab in the UK and Serco Australia. Prior to that Mike was principal consultant and consulting manager at The Hiser Group – the company that pioneered user-centred design in Australia. His background also includes technical writing roles at Unisys and Westpac.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Arts (anthropology and political science) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

In his spare time...

Mike is a motorcycle tragic, newbie swim squad member and beach and outdoors enthusiast. Family, friends, music and reading are also a big part of his spare-time jigsaw.
